What does a crane operator do when they are hungry?

Construction work on the VRT’s new broadcasting centre is in full swing and in less than two years the Flemish public broadcaster will have a brand-new home at the back of our current site in the Brussels municipality of Schaarbeek. Currently a large team of construction workers is working on the new broadcasting centre. Among them are crane operators.

But what do you do if you are dozens of metres up and it’s your lunch break? Do you waste precious time climbing down or do you ask a cooperative colleague to attach your lunch to the winch so you can enjoy it in the cab of your crane with a panoramic view of Brussels a large part of Flemish Brabant and beyond? The crane operator of the large crane on the VRT’s construction site choses the latter option and this hasn’t gone unnoticed.

VRT News filmed the Portugues crane operator winching his lunch up to his cab. The building site’s foreman Frederik Verla told VRT News that the crane operator "often doesn’t have enough time to take his break at ground level. This way he is able to enjoy a warm meal at lunchtime the same as his colleagues”.
