Bart De Wever ready to present initial discussion document to leaders of the Christian democrats and socialists

The man that is currently paving the way for talks to commence on the formation of a new Flemish government, the Flemish nationalist leader Bart De Wever, will present an initial discussion document to the leaders of the other would-be coalition parties on Tuesday afternoon. The document will be presented to the Flemish socialist leader Melissa Depreatere and the Flemish Christian democrat leader Sammy Mahdi.

Last Friday Mr De Wever, Ms Depraetere and Mr Mahdi had their first formal meeting on preparing the ground for the formation of a new Flemish government. At the meeting the Christian democrats and the socialists asked Mr De Wever to prepare an initial discussion document in order to find out what his plans are for the new Flemish government. Five years ago it was an initial discussion document written by Mr De Wever that marked the start of the talks that led to the formation the now outgoing Flemish coalition.

Bart De Wever took three days to draft the document that was written together with the outgoing Flemish PM’s Chief of Staff andere Jeroen Overmeer and the head of the Flemish nationalist party N-VA’s research unit Sven De Neef. On Monday the three party leaders spoke to eachother on the telephone.

This afternoon, Mr De Wever will invite his colleagues Melissa Depraetere (socialist) and Sammy Mahdi (Christian democrat) individually and hand them the document. They will each be given a few day to table additions and amendments to it.

Only once agreement has been reached on an initial discussion text will Mr De Wever appoint a so-called “Formateur” whose job it will be to form a new Flemish Government. Often, but not always, it is the Formateur that leads the government that they have been instrumental in forming.
