A month’s rainfall expected this week, 1722 emergency number activated

A month's worth of rainfall is expected this week. The VRT’s weatherman Bram Verbruggen says that the rainfall will be particularly heavy on Tuesday and Thursday. The Federal Interior Department has activated the 1722 emergency number that can be used to report non-life-threatening incidents caused by storm conditions or flooding. The Royal Meteorological Institute (KMI) has issued a code yellow weather warning.

A month’s worth of precipitation amounts to 70l of water per m². According to the VRT’s weatherman Bram Verbruggen, we can expect that amount of rainfall during this week.

“On Tuesday and Thursday, we expect heavy showers, with a lot of rain in some places. On these days, up to 30 litres of water per square metre could fall. Monday and Friday will also be wet, so we will probably get close to 70 l per m² this week."

Flooding

So there is a chance of flooding, but it is not yet clear where it will occur. "The issues will be due to sudden heavy downpours. It is possible that the sewers will not be able to cope”, Bram Verbruggen says.

Flooding caused by rivers and streams bursting their banks is less likely. "I have looked at the water levels and they are not too bad at the moment. The rivers have been able to drain off the water of the past few weeks reasonably well. The chances of rivers bursting their banks or streams being unable to take the water are slim."

Emergency number and code yellow

The Federal Interior Department has activated the emergency number 1722 as it says that there is a risk of a storm or flooding.

The Royal Meteorologic Institute (KMI) has issued a code yellow weather warning for Luxembourg Province from Monday night. There more than 25l/m² of precipitation is expected within a 24-hour period.

Dry weekend

Next weekend will be a bit drier. "Maybe even completely dry. It will also get warmer. Early next week we’ll be heading towards 25°C" Bram Verbruggen says.

When we can expect a longer dry spell is difficult to predict right now. "Right now, I don't see any immediate signal that it will be dry for 3 or 4 dry days in a row. But it could still go either way," the VRT’s weatherman says.
