Francophone greens rule out participation in the Brussels regional government

The Francophone green party Ecolo has ruled out participation in the next Brussels regional government. In an interview with the Francophone public broadcaster RTBF, the outgoing Federal Climate Minister Zakia Khattabi, who headed Ecolo’s list in Sunday’s regional elections in Brussels, said given the scale of her party’s losses, Ecolo had no desire to take part in a new regional coalition government.

Ms Khattabi told RTBF that "Ecolo recorded its lowest score. I don't see in what scenario we would not respect the signal given to us by the voters”

In the past the Francophone liberals (MR) have often singled out the greens for particularly vehement criticism. As a result of this Ecolo says that it has no desire to help MR (that is now the largest party in Brussels) to gain power by helping it form a coalition.

After Sunday's heavy defeat, Ecolo’s co-leaders Jean-Marc Nollet and Rajae Maouane announced their resignations. Ms Khattabi told RTBF that she has no desire to lead the party again. She believes that it is now up to the younger generation to take charge.
