Speaking on VRT radio the socialist Flemish MP, Hannelore Goeman says that the success of the former party colleague Fouad Ahidar’s new party Team Fouad Ahidar in Brussels was thanks to “lies and fake news”.

Ms Goeman recogonises that Team Fouad Ahidar had been successful in Sunday’s elections. The party won three seats in the Brussels regional Parliament and 1 seat in the Flemish Parliament.
Ms Goeman told the VRT that " Fouad has been in politics for 20 years, has been getting out and about for 20 years. In that respect, he has been a real representative of the people and he has been able to build a very large network. I think we as a party do need to learn lessons from that”.
Nevertheless, she feels that what she describes as “the negative side” of Mr Ahidar’s campaign should also be mentioned. “Fouad Ahidar has run a particularly strong anti-campaign against us full of fake news and lies in all manner of WhatsApp groups and I think that has definitely hurt us too”.
It seems that it will be sometime yet before the issues between Mr Ahidar and the Flemish socialist party have been resolved. “Vooruit is a party with very clear principles. Mr Ahidar has made some comments in the past about Hamas' attack being a small act he also said some things in parliament about ritual slaughter in the name of Allah. That is absolutely unacceptable to us".
