The people of Brussels are looking forward to the annual Ommegang of Brussels, the famous medieval pageant that proceeds through the streets of the Belgian and Flemish capital. This year the Ommegang will take to the streets on 3 and 5 July. It also includes a grand spectacle on the Grand-Place, Brussels' historic market square, and the traditional Renaissance Village at the Zavel. The Ommegang is an excellent opportunity for the capital to highlight its rich historical past. Today it takes the form of a re-enactment of the Joyous Entry of Emperor Charles V and his son Philip II in 1549.
The procession through the streets of the Old Town will stretch for almost 2 kilometres. It starts from the Park of Brussels and wends its way to Brussels’ historic market square. 900 re-enactors representing 74 folklore groups from all across Belgium are expected to take part.
French actress and film director Josiane Balasko will star as herald of the Ommegang spectacle. Both on 3 and 5 July the ceremony on the Grand-Place starts at 9pm. Walloon broadcaster Thomas de Bergeyck will serve as MC.
Jousting and knightly combat
From Wednesday 3 to Saturday 6 July, visitors can also head for the Renaissance Village on the squares of the Zavel in the upper town of Old Brussels. Here medieval jousting and bouts of knights fighting will thrill the crowds. Visitors will also be able to learn more about medieval crafts. A crossbow shooting competition will be held too as has become the custom.
The historic festival, originally a religious procession, commemorates the Joyous Entry of Emperor Charles V in Brussels in 1549, when the people of Brussels welcomed their Hapsburg ruler as he presented his son to them, the later King Philip II of Spain.
The religious procession was revamped in 1930 and today some 1,000 participants throng the streets of Brussels. The festival has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019.
Seating is provided for 2,000 spectators on the Grand Place. Tickets cost between 55 and 85 euros, depending on the seat.
