As no results may be published until voting has ended in every EU country, it wasn’t until late on Sunday evening that we learned the identity of the 13 Flemings, 8 Francophones and 1 German-speaker that Belgian voters have elected to the European Parliament.
European elections in Flanders: liberals lose a seat, socialists and far-left win a seat each
Unlike in the election to the Federal and Flemish Parliaments, the far-right Vlaams Belang won the largest number of votes (albeit by a hare’s breath) in the European elections in Flanders. Both Vlaams Belang and the Flemish nationalist party N-VA retain their 3 seats in the European Parliament.
The Flemish socialist party Vooruit won an additional seat and now has 2 MEPs. The far-left PVDA also won a seat for the first time.
The Flemish Christian democrat party CD&V retained its 2 seats. As in the other elections held on Sunday, the Flemish liberal party Open VLD fared badly and lost one of its 2 seats. The Flemish green party Groen retains its seat.
Liberals score strongly in Francophone Belgium
The Francophone liberal party MR scored strongly gaining an extra seat. MR now has 3 MEPs. The Francophone socialists retain their three seats. The Francophone Christian democrats retain their 1 seat as does the far-left PTB. The Francophone green party Ecolo has lost one of its two seats.
The one German-speaking Belgian representative in the European Parliament is a Christian democrat.
