A fire that broke out last night at a waste processing and recycling plant on the Groendreef, in Brussels’ North District is now under control. However, fire fighters are still at the scene on Friday morning to extinguish the smoldering embers that remain after the fire.
During the height of the blaze a large plume of smoke could be seen over a wide area. However, the Brussels Fire Service reassures the public that the smoke was not toxic.
The Brussels Fire Service spokesman Walter Derieuw told VRT News that ‘We received a call reporting the fire at around 9:20pm. Our crews are at the scene to extinguish the fire. Several fire engine were dispatched to the scene."
At one point the Fire Service also considered drawing water from the canal to use to extinguish the fire.
It was pile of old washing machines and boilers that were stored outside on the canal quayside that caught fire. The cause of the fire is still unclear. No one was injured in the blaze.
