In future cars with foreign numberplates will no longer be checked by individual parking attendants. The checks will only be carried out by scan vans Brussels media outlet BRUZZ reports.
Foreign cars no longer to be checked manually in Brussels parking lots
Collecting parking fines from foreign drivers is time-consuming and is a complex process, a spokesman for the brussels parking agency parking.brussels explained. "It is very difficult for the Belgian authorities to prosecute offenders that fail to pay parking fees and recover the monies owed."
An exception is made for vehicles with French and Dutch numberplates because Belgium has bilateral agreements with these two countries, which makes it easier to collect fines.
Scan van checks 10,000 cars a day
Still, foreign vehicles will not escape scot-free entirely. "Checks will still be carried out by scanning vehicles," a spokesman noted. "A parking attendant can check 700 cars a day, while a scanning van checks 10,000 cars a day."
While foreign cars mean parking attendants are often carrying out unnecessary administrative operations, a scan vehicle does not distinguish between domestic and foreign vehicles and the checks do not take up any extra time.
