Number of electric cars being registered continues to rise, especially in Flanders

There was another significant rise recorded in the number of electric vehicles being registered by private individuals in Belgium last month. This was the case both for new and used vehicles.

According to figures released on Wednesday by the industry federation Traxio growth in the number of electric vehicles being registered is particularly strong in Flanders. Currently 81.4% of all new electric vehicles registered in Belgium are registered to owners that live in Flanders. The same is the case for 76% of second-hand electric vehicles registered here.

Compared with the first 5 months of last year the number of new electric vehicles registered in Belgium was up by 96.5% in the period from 1 January to 31 May. A total of 7,349 vehicles were registered during the first 5 months of 2024, up from 3,752 during the same period last year.

The increase is greater still (144.3%) for used electric vehicles registered by private individuals. Here 4,107 were registered between 1 January and 31 May 2024. This compares with 1,681 such vehicles during the same period last year.

More used cars and fewer new cars sold

Meanwhile, the number of registrations of used cars in general also rose by 4.3% in May, to 60,284. According to Traxio, the market remains buoyant thanks to an abundant supply of relatively new second-hand vehicles.

The number of new cars being registered on the other hand, fell by 5.9% to 38,907. However, the trend remains upwards for the year so far with a 0.5% increase in the cumulative total of new vehicles sold during the first five months of the year compared with the same period last year.
