Baker Els from Buddingen (Zoutleeuw – Flemish Brabant) has new pastries in her display window: average speed camera donuts and flash eclairs. The pastries are intended to warn customers about a new average speed camera system in the local area. “It’s a tongue in cheek initiative” explains Baker Els, though she is ready to admit any profits will help to pay ten outstanding speeding fines.
‘Speedy Els the Baker’ dishes out ‘flash eclairs’ to warn drivers against speed cameras
Earlier this week, on one and the same day, Els received seven speeding fines. She added them to the three she had already collected. The fines are connected to the new average speed camera checks in her locality: “Don’t get me wrong” says Els. “I have nothing against such systems, but often the speeding offence has been ‘corrected’ to a mere 51 kilometre per hour offence and I think fines like that are a bit rich!”
The fines total more than 500 euros. Els is now keen to warn fellow drivers of the danger!
“We’ve baked pastries decorated with the local speed limit and they are selling like hotcakes. I’m not the only one who has been mass-fined. One customer told me he had 21 fines!”
Local mayor Marc Wijnants explains the decision to introduce the new average speed cameras was not taken lightly: “It’s a decision that can count on broad support because people believe in safety and enforcement”.
