Among the issues to be discussed at Friday’s meeting will be addition military, political and financial support for Ukraine and the current situation in the Middle East. Mr De Croo will also talk to the US President about trade relations between the European Union and the United States.

In a press release Mr De Croo says that “Relations between the United States and Belgium are more important than ever and our country is a bridgehead to the EU. The meeting with the American President confirms Belgium's status as a valued strategic partner of the United States. In recent years, we have worked closely together to support Ukraine and to bring sanctions against Russia”.

In addition to this, the visit to Washington DC also provides an opportunity to defend and promote the interests of European industry and Belgian companies. “The United States is Belgium’s largest export market for Belgium outside the EU and Belgium is the third most important export destination for the US companies within the EU".
