Prime Minister Alexander De Croo (Flemish liberal/Open VLD) travels to Washington DC on Friday to meet with US President Joe Biden. The two leaders will discuss the war in Ukraine as well as the unrest in the Middle East. Bilateral issues too will come under scrutiny. 2006 is the last time a Belgian leader was welcomed to the White House.
PM De Croo expected in Washington DC on Friday for meeting with President Biden
President Biden has already visited Belgium twice, in 2021 and 2022. Now, in turn, Prime Minister De Croo is travelling to the US.
On the agenda find military, political and financial support to Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East. As part of the Belgian presidency of the European Union, Prime Minister De Croo will also address EU-US trade relations.
"The relationship between the US and Belgium is more important than ever and our country is a bridgehead to the EU," he said. “The meeting with the US President confirms Belgium's status as a valued strategic partner of the US. For example, we have worked closely together in recent years to support Ukraine and sanction Russia," a press release reads.
"In addition, this visit also provides an opportunity to defend the interests of European industry and Belgian companies. The United States is the largest export destination for Belgium outside the European Union and for the US Belgium is the third export destination in the EU."
