The accident happened yesterday, a little after noon. The emergency services received a call reporting that someone had fallen in the Roque Nublo area. That is one of Gran Canaria's most famous and highest rock formations, situated a few kilometres from the village of Tejeda.

Two helicopters and an ambulance were immediately sent to the scene. Rescue services were able to reach the victim but could only establish that she had died. According to local media, the woman fell over 100 metres to her death. The Belgian woman's body has since been recovered.  The local authorities are looking into the circumstances of the accident.

According to local media, the victim was 57 years old, and was in Gran Canaria with her daughter. The daughter reportedly saw everything happen and notified the emergency services.

It is the second time in a short period that a Belgian woman has died after falling off a cliff. In early May, a 20-year-old student fell from the Cliffs of Moher, on the west coast of Ireland. She had been visiting the cliffs together with three friends, lost her balance and fell to her death.
