On Tuesday police found the bodies of a 63-year-old man and his former partner at a house on the Henri Hollevoetlaan in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek (Brussels). They had been killed by a 34-year-old man that was residing illegally in Belgium and had been living at the house for the past two years.

The suspect handed himself in to police. The man was arrested and formally charged with manslaughter. He will appear before magistrates today (Friday). They will decide whether he is to remain in custody. The man’s lawyer Nicolas Crutzen told journalists that “My client has made a full confession. We are now trying to understand what exactly happened”.

11 years

Mr Crutzen says that his client had never been in trouble with the law before. "He has been in the country for 11 years and the victims had taken him into their home. He has no criminal record, but apparently something happened there that made him blow a fuse."

Mr Crutzen added that he will not be requesting his client’s release. It seems likely that the suspect will be remanded in custody and that he will remain on remand at Haren Prison (Brussels) for another month.
