Three suspects in grid cover motorway killing not being charged with murder

The Namur public prosecutor’s office reports that three of the five suspects in the case of a lorry driver that died after a grid cover was thrown through the windscreen of his lorry from a motorway bridge have been charged with the malicious obstruction of traffic causing death rather than with murder.

At around 1:30am on Saturday morning a grid cover was thrown from a bridge above the E42 Liège to Namur motorway. The grid cover smashed through the windscreen of a lorry that was driving along the motorway. The driver of the truck, a Romanian man in his 50s, was killed. His partner, who was a passenger in the lorry, was able to stop the vehicle. She was not injured.

Five suspects, two of whom minors, were arrested. The three adult suspects will appear before magistrates on Friday. It will then be decided whether they should remain in custody. A juvenile judge is dealing with the two minors involved in the case. One of them has been sent to the secure young offenders centre in Saint-Hubert (Luxembourg province). The second has been released.

The Namur public prosecutor’s office says that the early stages of the investigation point to the suspects having used laughing gas. The investigation is still ongoing. Earlier this week the public prosecutor’s office had said that the case was being treated as murder. One of the five suspects had handed himself into to the police.
