137,000 tonnes of soil will be replaced around the 3M site

The remediation of soil pollution in the area around the 3M site at Zwijdrecht in Antwerp Province will require the removal and replacement of around 137,000 tonnes of soil. The scale of what will be a mammoth operation to clean up a wide area around the 3M site of PFAS pollution was announced by the Flemish Public Waste Agency OVAM on Tuesday.

In its press release, OVAM said it had received the plan for a phased soil remediation project for the residential and recreational areas in Zwijndrecht and Beveren (East Flanders) from 3M Belgium.

The Waste Agency judges the plan to be complete and admissible. OVAM says that a public enquiry can now start and once this has been completed 3M can make a start on the huge remediation project.
