Around 2 million private sector workers can vote for their union representatives during next two weeks
The social elections in Belgium take place every 4 years. This year those that work for around 4,000 companies in the private sector with more than 100 employees will be able to cast their votes for their works council reps. In Belgium works councils are able to, for example, demand information on a company’s restructuring plans.
In addition to this those that work for companies with 50 or more staff can vote for representatives on internal committees for health and safety at work. There are 7,200 private companies with 50 or more staff here in Belgium.
At the last social elections that were held in 2020, the Christian trade union ACV took the largest share of the vote (55%). Second was the socialist trade union ABVV with 34% with the liberal trade union ACLVB gaining around 10% of the votes cast.
