The local authority in Brussels municipality of Oudergem is taking legal action against the Flemish Regional Authority about the work that is being carried out at the Leonard Interchange between the E411 Brussels to Luxemburg motorway and the R0 Brussels Orbital motorway. Although in the Flemish Brabant municipality of Tervuren, the Leonard Interchange is very close to Tervuren’s border with Oudergem.
Brussels municipality takes legal action against Flemish Regional Authority over roadworks at Leonard Interchange
The municipal authorities in Oudergem hope that by taking legal action the measures contain in a special bill that was passed in 1980 will be applied. If this is the case the work at the intersection will be put on hold to allow for talks to take place between the municipal authorities in the area, the Flemish Regional Authority and other interested parties. The case will come before a court on Wednesday.
The Mayor of Oudergem Sophie de Vos (Francophone federalist) told the Brussels regional news platform Bruzz that under the conditions set out in the 1980 special bill access and exit routes to and from the Brussels Orbital motorway can only be scrapped or closed after consultations have taken place between the regions. Ms De Vos added that the aim of the legal action is to put the work on hold to allow consultative talks to take place. “We don’t necessarily want the work to be stopped altogether”.
"Every public works project has it surprises and the Flemish Regional Authority was already aware in February of the additional issues that have arisen with the tunnel walls. So there was plenty of time to organise consulative talks, not least because Flemish municipalities such as Kraainem and Wezembeek-Oppen are also impacted by the closure”.
New talks
In a reaction a spokesman for the Flemish Transport Minister Lydia Peeters (liberal) told Bruzz that no comment will be given concerning the legal action.
"As things stand the work will continue. Later today the various partners will meet to examine what additional measures can be taken to improve the situation for traffic”.
