The 69-year-old woman who was stabbed on a train parked in Antwerp Central Station yesterday morning is now in stable condition, according to the Antwerp prosecutor’s office.

At approximately 11.20 on 4 April, a man stabbed the woman several times while she was sitting in the train. She was taken to the hospital in critical condition but is now out of danger. Two eyewitnesses at the scene also received medical assistance for shock.

Railway security guards were able to detain the suspect near the entrance to the station. According to police, he is an Iraqi national who has official refugee status in Belgium.

It is the man’s second offense this week: On Monday he got into a scuffle with police and was arrested for hitting an officer. He had been released, but it is unclear if the incident had anything to do with the stabbing. The motive for the stabbing is currently unclear. The man is scheduled to appear before a judge today.
