Local police apprehended the suspect at Brussels North railway station following the incident.  "The suspect is a 27-year-old man," says Yasmina Vanoverschelde of the Brussels public prosecutor's office. "He surrendered immediately. Police were also able to seize a pocketknife."

According to the prosecutor's office, the man experienced earlier psychiatric episodes. "The investigation is continuing and is being conducted by the Railway Police," the prosecutor's office notes.

The victim, a passenger, was taken to hospital after the stabbing and is no longer in a critical condition but must remain in hospital for some time.
