Foreign tourist in critical condition after tourist bus crash in Brussels

The accident happened on Sunday afternoon on the Steenweg op Vilvoorde. Initial investigations revealed that the bus carrying 33 foreign tourists suffered technical problems, after which the driver crashed into a tree. A total of 22 people were injured, 3 of them pretty badly.

Exactly how the accident could have happened is not yet clear.

"The exact cause of the accident is not yet known," says Yasmina Vanoverschelde of the Brussels public prosecutor's office. "An expert has been appointed and attended the scene to conduct an investigation. After the accident the driver tested negative for alcohol and drugs use"

Concern for worst off victim

One of the 3 people seriously injured in the accident has already been allowed to leave hospital, as have all the people with minor injuries. "One person is still in life-threatening condition in the intensive care unit," the prosecutor's office says. "A second seriously injured victim is no longer critical, but is still in hospital."
