A 50-year-old man has been found dead in a ditch in Wuustwezel (Antwerp Province) after he was involved in a cycling accident. It is likely that the speed pedelec (an electric bicycle capable of reaching speeds of up to 45 km/h) he was riding crashed into a tree after which the man fell into the ditch.
The accident happened on the Kalmthoutsesteenweg, the main road between Wuustwezel and Kalmthout. A passer-by first noticed the bike by the side of the road early this morning. They then found the man in a ditch. The emergency services were called. However, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The police and a traffic accident investigation expert are investigating the precise circumstances surrounding the accident. The Kalmthoutsesteenweg was closed in both directions for a time on Monday morning.
