A drawing by Flemish illustrator Klaas Verplancke features on the cover of the New Yorker next week. It is only the fifth time that an illustration by a Belgian artist will appear on the cover of this influential American magazine. Making the cover of the New Yorker is a high point in the career of any draughtsman.
It was only last week that the Fleming was asked to prepare a drawing for the cover. “They requested a cover drawing as well as online animation” explains Verplancke.
Everything had to go very quickly. Verplancke had really only been given a day in which to complete the work but took two.
“The result is a cartoon-like illustration referencing life in New York”.
The drawing shows people on a metro carriage after a long working day. One of the commuters is a woman wearing a coat with a crossword pattern. The guy sitting next to her is trying to solve the crossword.
