Antwerp police believe attack has been thwarted after 13-year-old boy was caught with a firebomb

Police in Antwerp have apprehended a 13-year-old boy that was carrying a bomb made from fireworks. The boy was caught red-handed with the bomb in the Borgerhout district of the city. The Antwerp Public Prosecutor’s office says that it is likely that the teenager was planning to carry out a firebomb attack on a house in Borgerhout. It is still being investigated whether there is a link to the trade in illegal narcotics.

The boy was detained on Sunday evening while he was trying to attach a kind of firework bomb to the front of a house in the Koolstraat in Borgerhout.

The Antwerp Public Prosecutor’s office says that “It is likely that the police have been able to avert an attack”. The bomb was made out of Cobra fireworks that are illegal in Belgium. The boy has since appeared before a juvenile judge.

Last Friday evening a house on the Ferdinand Berckmanstraat in Borgerhout was attacked. The attack was possibly linked to drugs. Although there was material damage, no one was injured.
