On Friday many bus, tram and metro services were cancelled as public transport workers took part in a day of action to mark International Women’s Day. Today trades unionists are staging a demonstration against European austerity measures. The socialist trade union ABVV has issued a strike notice for today that covers its members if they wish to take part in the demonstration.

Tuesday’s disruption follows an evening of misery for those wishing to travel from the centre of Brussels to the west of the city. Flooding at the Sint-Katelijne metro station in Brussels city centre meant that metro services on lines 1 and 5 were suspespend between De Brouckere and Beekkant from just after 7pm. Work to resolve the flooding issue went on into late into the evening.
