French police detain three teenagers with links to Brussels terror plotters

Police in France have detained three teenagers that are suspected of involvement in a plot to carry out a terrorist attack on the Brussels cultural centre Botanique. The three teenagers, aged between 15 and 17, were arrested in three different cities across France. They were in contacted with four teenagers, three of whom minors, that were detained in Belgium last weekend.

The French press agency AFP writes that a reliable source has told it that the three teenagers detained in France were not directly involved in the preparations for the attack in Belgium. However, like the suspects detained here they were supporters of radical Islamist ideology.

Last week properties were searched in Brussels, Liège, Charleroi (Hainaut) and Ninove (East Flanders). Four teenagers, three of whom minors, were detained. The adult suspect has since been formally arrested and remanded in custody; the three minors have been sent to a secure young offenders centre.

During online chat session the Belgian suspects make references to the extremist Islamist terror group Islamic State (IS). The four are said to have looked for weapons on the dark web. No weapons or explosives were found when police searched properties linked to the four on Sunday.
