Cyber-attack brings production at Duvel Moortgat breweries to a standstill

A cyber-attack on the Duvel Moortgat brewery has brought production to a standstill. The brewery produces beers including the world-renowned Duvel and the pils beer Bel Pils. Production has been halted at all Duvel Moortgat’s breweries in Belgium and at its site in Kansas in the United States.

Duvel Moortgat’s Ellen Aerts told VRT News that the cyber-attack happened at around 1:30am on Wednesday. "Our systems report straight away when such an attack is taking place and this procedure worked”.

"Our IT department acted immediately and is currently still working to find out exactly what happened. They are trying to find a solution as quickly as possible”.

The cyber-attack is a ransomware attack in which cyber-criminals attack an IT system in order to get money from their victims.

Ms Aerts told VRT News "We have decided to switch of our servers and as a result production is at a standstill at all our Belgian sites and at our site in the United States”.

It is still unclear when production will resume. "We are confident that we will be able to re-start production soon. In the meantime, there is enough stock, so Duvel drinkers don’t have to worry”.
