Restart of The Body Shop Belgium uncertain, according to receiver

The Dutch official receiver that is dealing with the bankruptcy of the Belgian arm of British cosmetics chain The Body Shop says that it is uncertain if it will be able to start trading again in Belgium.

As we reported last week a Dutch court declared the Belgian arm of The Body Shop chain bankrupt last Tuesday. It was up to a Dutch court to appoint the receiver to settle the bankruptcy, as The Body Shop’s Belgian stores are part of The Body Shop Benelux that is a Dutch-registered company.

The official receiver Alice van der Schee told journalists that "There is currently no clarity on the future of the shops. There is interest, though”. However, Ms van der Schee would not elaborate any further.

The Body Shop currently has 13 stores in Belgium. Due to financial problems, The Body Shop previously closed its stores in the UK and a bankruptcy petition is also pending in Germany.

A spokeswoman for the cosmetics chain said there were no financial problems at its Dutch operation and its stores there will continue to operate as normal.
