A shopkeeper in the Limburg city of Genk made a surprising discovery among the fresh broccoli that she sells in her shop. A silver ring was stuck in one of the broccoli plants. The shopkeeper put a photograph of the ring on Facebook and the ring has since been returned to its rightful owner.
Ann Vandenwyngaert owns the Herteleer bakery (that also sells vegetables) in Genk. She told VRT News that at first the owner of the ring didn’t realise that she had lost it. Ms Vandenwyngaert found the ring when she was clearing up the vegetables in her shop. "I thought it was so funny because I found the ring right on top of the broccoli. At first, I thought that one of the growers might of lost it, but that turned out not to be the case”.
She launched an appeal to find the owner of the ring on social media and after 4 days the owner of the ring was found. "It was a regular customer that has been coming to the shop for 25 years. At first, she hadn’t realised that she had lost her ring. The ring is a little too big for her. She has thin fingers and so the ring is always loose and that is probably why she lost it”.
It is not surprising that the ring was found in the broccoli as its owner buys broccoli at the shop every week. As well as her ring the woman was also given two free cakes and some broccoli to take home with her.
Ms Vandenwyngaert told VRT News that “I am very pleased that we have found the owner of the ring, not least because I saw that it had really been worn a lot. I know the owner of the ring really well and that makes returning it extra special”.
