Around 130 people were evacuated from their homes after fire broke out at a block of flats on the Antwerpsesteenweg, just north of Brussels City Centre, on Tuesday night. 9 of those evacuated required hospital treatment.
At around midnight on Tuesday the Brussels Fire Service received a call to deal with a large fire that was raging at a lock of flats on the Antwerpsesteenweg in Brussels’ North District.
The Fire Service spokesman Walter Derieuw told VRT News that “The fire broke out in a flat on the third floor. The fire spread to lats on the fourth and fifth floor.”
All 120 residents of the 10-story building were evacuated. Me Derieuw told VRT News that “The residents were taken to a nearby police sport hall. Nine residents, including several children, were taken to hospital with slight smoke inhalation. A fireman sustained slight injuries to his eye while he was talking the blaze”.
The fire, the cause of which is not yet known, was extinguished quickly. 4 flats are currently unhabitable. 28 residents are being put up in a nearby hotel.
