If a suspect that was detained carrying a knife outside the Mayor's home earlier this week is released, a plainclothes police protection officer will be assigned to Mr De fauw.
Bruges police step up patrols near to Mayor’s home
On Wednesday evening a man was apprehended on the drive of Mr De fauw’s home. The man was carrying a butcher’s knife with a 30cm blade. He has since been arrested on suspicion of possessing illegal weapons and harassment.
Since then, police have taken additional measures to ensure Mr De fauw’s safety.
Mr De fauw told VRT News that "The Chief of Police has proposed increasing the number of patrols that pass by here. The incident might encourage others to come and harass me. The police will patrol here in the area”.
Plainclothes protection officer
The suspect will appear before magistrates on Tuesday. "I presume that they will remand him in custody for another month, which means that he will stay locked up. If he is released, a plainclothes police officer will shadow me during my public appearances”.
