Amber warning for respiratory illnesses: masking returns for the vulnerable

Belgium’s Risk Management Group, the RMG, is urging vulnerable people to mask.  A surge in respiratory infections  has been recorded.  Consequently, the RMG has declared a code amber alert.

The alert means a new focus on the need for ventilation and extra vigilance with regard to vulnerable people.  They are urged to mask in busy places like on public transport, but also in locations like waiting rooms where there is an increased risk of transmission. People in close contact with the vulnerable should also mask.

Vulnerable people include the over 65s, people with cardiovascular issues, diabetes, lung disease or cancer.

In addition to masking the RMG urges people to ventilate well, sneeze in a disposable hankey, to wash hands and stay home when ill.
