Kristof De Schepper broke the world barbecue record in Haaltert (East Flanders) last weekend. Kristof spent 81 hours cooking pieces of meat without sleeping. He can now call himself the world barbecue record holder, but his biggest goal was to raise money for Stand Up to Cancer.
Kristof cooks meat on the barbie for 81 hours in a row, breaks world BBQ record
The world record attempt began on Thursday at a cafe in Haaltert. To break the previous world record, Kristof De Schepper (50) had to stand at the barbecue and cook meat for 81 hours straight. That meant without stopping and therefore also without sleeping.
Sunday evening, after four days and three nights, the record had finally been broken. At 6pm the previous record had been equalled, but Kristof continued until 7:19pm or 19:19. He chose the time to stop especially to honour his football club: it was in 1919 that his favourite club Eendracht Aalst was founded.
"The last few days were mostly enjoyable," the brand-new BBQ world record holder told VRT. "Except for the last few hours. That's when I started to feel the strain. At one point I started babbling to myself."
Kristof’s initiative not only resulted in a new world record, but Kristof also raised a nice sum of money for Stand Up to Cancer. In March, his team will participate in the cancer-fundraiser’s 100 kilometres race. "Raising the money was actually the most important thing. We succeeded in that thanks to the massive turnout. For four days it was a madhouse. I'm now going home to shower, watch some TV and then I'm going to sleep!" the exhausted new world record holder told VRT.
