Nasty 'gas-like' smell mystifies in Antwerp

Antwerp fire service has received dozens of reports of a pungent smell of gas or something else in the city centre and the south of the city. The fire service and network operator Fluvius are looking for a possible cause but have not yet found a leak. Tests have not detected any gas either!

The complaints started yesterday evening. "It is also being described as a solid smell of petrol', some people also speak of 'rotten eggs'," Marie De Clerck of the fire service told VRT NWS. "Our crews have already attended a dozen scenes, but they have not been able to find a gas leak or cause of the odour anywhere. That's already good news."

Where the smell is coming from is not clear and its intensity waned in the course of the morning. The police, the environmental department and crews from grid operator Fluvius are also out and about trying find the cause of the smell. "People usually think the source needs to be found in the harbour when there is a nasty smell of this kind going around, but the chance the port is the source is small because the wind is not coming from that direction!" notes Marie.
