A 17-year-old girl travelling on an electronic scooter was killed in a road traffic accident in Willebroek (Antwerp) this morning. She was run down by a lorry. Police and traffic experts are trying to establish the exact nature of the accident.
“Police were alerted to an accident involving a scooter and a lorry around 8:30AM. Sadly the 17-year-old scooterist, who hailed from Willebroek, was killed” says police spokesman Dirk Van de Sande.
It’s not entirely clear what happened and traffic experts are trying to establish the exact nature of the accident. According to the prosecutor’s office they say the accident was not the result of visibility issues due to the truck’s dead zone. The lorry driver tested negative for drugs and alcohol.
There is extensive lorry traffic in the area. An 18-year-old cyclist died in similar circumstances last year, despite the presence of a cycle path.
