Doortje, a black and white cat from Roeselare, went missing in November. Her owners had given up all hope of finding her when they received a phone call from Nivelles, 130km away in Walloon Brabant.

“We had gone out looking and calling Doortje’s name, but we couldn’t find her anywhere,” her owner Fran Dedeurwaerder told Radio 2.

“Nobody in the neighbourhood had seen her. We had already resigned ourselves to the fact that our cat wouldn’t be coming back. Until this weekend, when we received a phone call from a Nivelles animal shelter. They had found Doortje and by reading her microchip, they found me.”

She didn’t celebrate immediately, and asked for them to send a photo of the cat, before driving across the country to fetch her.

“Doortje made lots of noise in the car, but when we got home, she laid down happily on my father’s lap again,” Fran said. “She has a few scratches, but otherwise she’s healthy. She has been outside a few times, and each time she found her way home.”

Her owners have no idea how their pet travelled 130km: “We can only guess that she hitched a ride on a lorry. I’d probably be amazed if the chip could show us where she had been. Now I’m just happy to be able to cuddle her again.”
