Three people were injured as a result of a gas explosion in Neder-Over-Heembeek in Brussels this morning. Work commissioned by Sibelga, the company responsible for the distribution of gas supplies, is thought to have caused the accident.
The explosion rocked the neighbourhood around 8:30AM this morning. One resident needed to be hospitalised with minor injuries. Two other people received treatment at the scene.
The fire service cordoned off the area and evacuated residents as well as pupils from a local school. Fire service spokesman Walter Derieuw explains that technicians of gas company Sibelga attended the scene to tackle the gas leak that has now been sorted. Leaking gas also caused a fire.
Sibelga says it was notified about a gas odour this morning. The explosion happened just as the company’s team arrived at the scene. The cause of the explosion is being investigated but it’s thought that a low-pressure mains was damaged during work on a pavement.
