2023 was yet another year during which the number of passengers using the bus, tram and metro services provided by the Brussels public transport company MIVB increased. During 2023 MIVB counted 376 million individual passenger journeys, an increase of 11% on 2022.
11% increase in passengers on Brussels public transport in 2023
The figures that were released on Wednesday showed that the largest increase in the number of passengers was on weekday evenings and at weekends.
Despite the increase in passenger numbers during 2023, the total number of journeys made on the MIVB network last year was still below what it was in the years prior to the coronavirus pandemic.
New services
This year MIVB plans to open a new tram line that will link the northern suburb of Neder-over-Heembeek with the Churchill tram stop in Ukkel. The new tram that will be given route number 10 will pass through the tram tunnel that runs under the Brussels city centre.
New trams, metro trains and electric buses are also due to enter service this year.
Safer stations
MIVB is also promising to make its stations safer and more pleasant for passengers. To this end funding from the Brussels Regional Government will be used to help drug addicts and homeless people that hang around in metro stations and underground tram stops find their way to organisations that can offer them assistance.
The Park and Central Station metro stations are being given a facelift.
