The Federal Parliament’s Transport Select Committee has approved plans for the establishment of a national cycle register. The aim of the register is to reduce the number of bicycle thefts. The Select Committee members voted unanimously to approve the bill that approves a cooperation agreement between the federal authorities and the regions that will pave the way for the establishment of the register.
Transport Select Committee gives national cycle register the thumbs up
The bill will now be put before a plenary session of the Federal Parliament and if approved there the new national bicycle register will be launched by the summer.
Last April the Federal Government and the regions signed an agreement that provided for the establishment of the MyBike national cycle register. The MyBike register already exists in the Brussels-Capital Region and will soon be rolled out in Flanders and Wallonia too. Under the MyBike scheme a bicycle is given a unique QR code that is registered in a databank. The databank is accessible to both the police and the public prosecutor’s office.
Those that register their bikes with MyBike can provide a host of details, including photographs and proof of purchase. The idea behind MyBike is to tackle bicycle thefts and the trade in stolen bikes.
