"One leaves nothing to chance," Mr Van Tigchelt told independent television. "Police intervened Saturday morning and the man was arrested and detained. This is how we are trying to neutralise the threats that are emerging."
Antwerp public prosecutors have confirmed the arrest: "The man was arrested on suspicion of preparing to commit a terrorist attack and possession of banned weapons. The suspect will appear before a judge next week, when a decision will be taken on his further arrest."
Earlier, Israel had revealed that Hamas, the organisation running Gaza that has been proscribed as a terrorist organisation by the EU, was plotting attacks in Europe. According to Justice Minister Van Tigchelt Belgian security services currently have "no concrete indications of Hamas attack plans" in Belgium.
