Woman has a narrow escape after sheet of ice smashes through the window of her car on Antwerp motorway

A woman from Wuustwezel (Antwerp Province) had a narrow escape after a sheet of ice smashed through the windscreen of her car while she was driving on the E19 motorway in the Antwerp district of Merksem. The ice fell from the roof of the trailer of a lorry that was in front of her. The woman, whose name is Inez, told VRT News that “In a matter of seconds a heavy sheet had smashed through the windscreen and was on the backseat of my car. Thankfully it smashed through on the passenger’s side”.

Inez is lucky not to have been seriously hurt or even killed. While she was driving home from work on Monday afternoon a sheet of ice that was 3 centimetres thick and 50 centimetres long smashed through the window of her car. The ice first landed on the bonnet before bouncing through the windscreen.

Fortunately, the only physical damage Inez suffered as a result of the incident is a sore throat and an ear infection. She told the VRT that “I was on the way home from work on the E19. I was driving on the left-hand lane near to the Kleine Bareel intersection. A lorry in front of me changed lanes and while it was doing this the piece of ice fell off the lorry and flew through my windscreen”.
