Almost 260,000 passengers used Antwerp Airport last year

2023 was a good year for Antwerp Airport. The airport that is located in the city’s Deurne district saw an 8.5% growth in passenger numbers compared with 2022. Although the figure of 259,764 passengers using the airport last year is encouraging, it is still below the number of passengers flying to and from Deurne in the years prior to the coronavirus pandemic.

In September 2023 more than 35,000 passengers travelled to or from Antwerp Airport. This was the highest ever figure for passenger numbers at Deurne. Nevertheless, last year passenger numbers will still only 85% of what they were in 2019, the last year before the pandemic.

The increase in passenger numbers at Antwerp Airport has come about largely thanks to the airline TuiFly. TuiFly has brought new planes to the airport offering services to and from Crete and the Canaries Islands. The new planes are not only more economical, but they also make less noise. Meanwhile, Luxair offers services between Antwerp and London.

The airport expects that the new destinations to lead to a further increase in passenger numbers. It expects that this year passenger numbers will return to pre-pandemic levels.

Number of business flights remains stable

After an increase in the number of business flights in previous years, last year saw the number of such flights remain stable.

The airport continues to invest in sustainability. It will soon start using two electrically powered planes for pilot training at one of the flying schools that are located at the airport.
