Despite the freezing temperatures this morning, slippery conditions did not materialise anywhere on motorways or cycle paths. During the night, gritters concentrated mainly on Limburg Province. On minor roads watch out for places where there are still puddles, due to the flooding last week. These could freeze over.
Last night temperatures plummeted to below zero. Temperatures will not rise above that today. It will be a really icy day. The Met Office expects maximum temperatures ranging from 0°C on the coast to -5 in eastern Belgium. The northeasterly wind may make it feel even colder. It will be mostly cloudy, but it will remain dry, although a local snow shower cannot be ruled out.
Road conditions did not seem to be too bad this morning. No major problems have been reported anywhere, the roads are in good shape, says Katrien Kiekens of the Roads Agency. "The road salt that we distributed during Saturday night and during Sunday was able to do its job well. Last night we put another 197 tonnes of road salt on the roads in Limburg Province. Some road salt was also used here and there in other provinces in places where we noticed it was needed."
The road surface temperature is negative, which means people should be vigilant for ice. This is especially important on smaller roads and cycle paths in the areas that experienced flooding over the past few days, and where puddles of water may have remained.
