The Americans are going back to the moon. Using a brand-new rocket, a private company has for the first time blasted a lander into space. The lander will attempt to land on the moon at the end of February.
The moon lander is also carrying a Belgian package on board: a small nickel disc with photos etched onto it as well as a text. The coin was made in Belgium by Belgium2themoon and, according to the NGO's website, it is "probably the world's smallest time capsule".
According to Belgium2themoon, nickel should be able to withstand the harsh conditions of the moon and "the data on the coin will probably be preserved on the lunar surface untouched for billions of years".
The coin will travel in the so-called DHL MoonBox, a box aboard lunar lander Peregrine. The box is the result of collaboration between Astrobotic and courier company DHL and allows people to send souvenirs to the lunar surface.
