The socialist rail union ACOD Spoor is threatening to take strike action from 10pm on Monday 29 January until 10pm on Thursday 1 February. If the strike goes ahead, it will be the third rail strike in three months. Last month and in November there were 48-hour rail strikes in protest at the Belgian rail company NMBS’ efficiency drive. It is still unclear whether the Christian rail union ACV Transcom and the liberal rail union VSOA Spoor will join the strike planned for the end of this month.

ACOD Spoor says that dialogue between the unions and the management at NMBS is failing. The union says that this is because “it has remained limited to an exchange of information about decision that have already been taken by management”. ACOD Spoor believes that NMBS’ management is oblivious their employees’ concerns.
"Since our successful action in November and December we have to date not received any invitation for talks”. ACOD says that as no steps have been forthcoming on the part of management it has decided to issue a new strike notice.
The union says that the reorganisation plans are further proof that management has no knowledge of the situation on the ground and only takes budgetary considerations into account.
ACOD Spoor’s Günther Bauwens added that the plans "Offer no operational advantages to passengers. Furthermore, this will lead to even worse punctuality, even less service and certainly not to a reduction in the number of cancelled trains".
