Shipping at the Terneuzen sluice complex in the Dutch province of Zeeland has been partially halted to allow for an accelerated flow of water from the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal into the Western Scheldt Estuary. After a meeting with her Dutch counterpart, the Flemish Transport and Public Works Minister Lydia Peeters (liberal) said "We want to drain as much water as quickly as possible through the Netherlands into the Western Scheldt”.

Shipping on the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal partially halted to allow water to flow into the Western Scheldt estuary more quickly
Published:
Today (Thursday) the sluice complex’s West Lock will be closed to shipping between 11am and 4pm. The complex’s East Lock will remain closed until 5pm. The operation will also involve the use of Terneuzen's New Lock for sluicing.
The operation will allow for the accelerated discharge of large amounts of rainwater from Flanders through Zeeland and onwards into the Western Scheldt during low tide. If necessary, the operation will be repeated in the coming days.
