Offshore wind farms in the Belgian sector of the North Sea were able to produce a record amount of electricity in 2023. A total 8 terawatt-hours of electricity were generated by Belgian off-shore windfarms. This is roughly equivalent to the annual consumption of 2 million households.
Record amount of electricity produced by Belgian offshore wind turbines
Electricity production from wind power reach an historic high in December 2023. However, even in July 2023, a month with little wind, more wind energy was generated than during July in previous years. Offshore wind turbines in the Belgian North Sea now cover almost 10% of total electricity consumption in Belgium. In Europe, only Denmark and the UK are doing better when it comes to wind power.
19 new land-based wind turbines were erected in Flanders last year. This is significantly fewer than in 2022, when 55 wind turbines were errected here. The new turbines ensure an annual production of 66 megawatts.
In total, the 689 wind turbines in Flanders produce 1,809 megawatts of electricity. According to the Flemish Wind Energy Association (VWEA), the fact that fewer wind turbines were installed in Flanders last year proves that the number of new turbines does not have to increase at the same rate every year. Despite drastically increasing investment costs, the sector continues to see growth and future opportunities in our region.
