De Lijn orders 92 electric buses from the Chinese company BYD

The Flemish public transport company De Lijn has placed an order for 92 standard-size electrically powered buses with the Chinese company BYD. The order that was announced by De Lijn on Thursday is the first for full-size electric buses to have been placed by the Flemish public transport company with the Chinese firm.

The 92 busses will be built at a factory in Hungary. The first of the buses should be delivered in early 2025. This is the first time that De Lijn has placed an order with a Chinese company for standard-size electrically-powered buses. However, 7 small electric buses that were built by a Chinese constructor have been part of De Lijn’s fleet in the West Flemish city of Bruges since last year.

De Lijn has another 40 standard size electric buses that were built by companies not based in China. These are in use in cities across Flanders, including Antwerp, Leuven and Gent.

During the next few months 36 new electric buses will enter service with De Lijn. These have been built by the Belgian bus manufacturer Van Hool. An additional 24 electric buses built by VDL will also enter service during the first part of the year. De Lijn has also placed an order for 109 articulated electric buses with the Italian manufacturer Iveco.
