Despite the Christmas holidays the Flemish parliament’s public standards’ select committee is meeting today. The unscheduled meeting has been called to examine the contacts between MFP Filip De Winter (far right/Vlaams Belang) and the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Lawmakers are seeking clarity from Mr De Winter, who is also a deputy parliamentary speaker. The probe comes after the Vlaams Belang party expelled Frank Creyelman, a former Flemish MP, who stands accused of spying for the PRC. Mr Creyelman received gifts of money and trips from the Chinese and also acted on their behalf. Lawmakers want to discover whether Mr De Winter was also involved in similar practices.

The focus of the probe is a contract for the supply of face coverings during the pandemic in which one of Mr De Winter’s Chinese contacts played a role. The committee has now asked the Belgian intelligence service to provide extra information in a bid to decide whether the MFP has violated the parliament’s code of conduct.
